Mary Marshall was baptised on 31st January 1808 at Kimpton in Hertfordshire, daughter of Elizabeth Marshall, formerly Bent, and her husband William Marshall, an agricultural labourer. From the baptisms of Mary's younger siblings we know that the family lived in the hamlet of Peters Green to the west of the parish. In the early 1820s the family moved a little to the north of Peters Green into the neighbouring parish of King's Walden. Mary's mother Elizabeth died in 1826, aged 43.

In 1832, aged 24, Mary married David Hill at King's Walden. They married at St Mary's Anglican church in King's Walden, but then had at least their first three children's births registered at the Colemans Green Baptist Church in Breachwood Green, the largest village in the parish of King's Walden. The 1841 census finds David and Mary living at Breachwood Green, with David working as an agricultural labourer.

Between 1833 and 1843 David and Mary appear to have had four children together. The 1851 census finds David, Mary and all four of their children living at Breachwood Green. By this time David was working as a plait dealer, and the family was able to retain a servant.

By 1861 all David and Mary's children had left home, and they were living together at the Smiths Shop in Breachwood Green. Both Mary and David were described as plait dealers. Mary died on 28th July 1868, aged 60. She was buried at the Colemans Green Baptist Church in Breachwood Green. David outlived her by eighteen years, and married again in 1870.
