James Hill was born on 19th September 1833 at King's Walden in Hertfordshire, eldest son of Mary Hill, formerly Marshall, and her husband David Hill, a plait dealer. The family lived at Breachwood Green, the main village in the parish of King's Walden. James appears in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses living with his parents and siblings at Breachwood Green. In 1851 he was described as a brick labourer.

James has yet to be traced after 1851. One of the most plausible explanations is that he died as a young man in 1854; there were two James Hills who died in the Hitchin district that year.
