Frederick Hill was born on 22nd April 1836 in the parish of King's Walden, Hertfordshire, where his parents lived in the village of Breachwood Green. He was the son of Mary Hill, formerly Marshall, and her husband David Hill, a plait dealer. Frederick appears in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses living with his parents and siblings at Breachwood Green.
In 1857, aged 21, Frederick married Sarah Hammett, who was a year or two younger than him and also from King's Walden. They appear in the 1861 census with their first child, living with Sarah's widowed father at Colemans Green, on the west side of Breachwood Green. Frederick was working as a plait dealer at this time.
Frederick and Sarah appear to have had four children together. The 1871 and 1881 censuses both find Frederick, Sarah and their children living at Breachwood Green, with Frederick working as an agricultural labourer. The 1891 and 1901 censuses both find Frederick and Sarah living on their own in a four roomed cottage at Breachwood Green. The 1901 census reports that Frederick was past work, and Sarah was working as a straw plaiter.
Frederick died in 1909, aged 72, having lived in Breachwood Green his whole life. Sarah appears in the 1911 census still in a four roomed cottage at Breachwood Green living with some of their grandchildren.
