Daniel Hill was born in 1843 in the parish of King's Walden, Hertfordshire. He was the youngest of four children of Mary Hill, formerly Marshall, and her husband David Hill, a plait dealer. Daniel appears in the 1851 census living with his parents and siblings in the village of Breachwood Green, the main village in King's Walden parish.
By 1861 Daniel had moved to London, boarding in the St Pancras area and working as a public clerk. He stayed in London, moving from St Pancras to Bermondsey between the 1861 and 1871 censuses.
Daniel died at the relatively young age of 32 in 1875 in the Southwark area of London.
