David Hill was baptised on 22nd May 1810 at King's Walden in Hertfordshire, son of James and Ann Hill. His next confirmed sighting is on 10th November 1832 when he was married there to Mary Marshall. They married at St Mary's Anglican church in King's Walden, but then had at least their first three children's births registered at the Colemans Green Baptist Church in Breachwood Green, the largest village in the parish of King's Walden. The 1841 census finds David and Mary living at Breachwood Green, with David working as an agricultural labourer.
Between 1833 and 1843 David and Mary appear to have had four children together. The 1851 census finds David, Mary and all four of their children living at Breachwood Green. By this time David was working as a plait dealer, and the family was able to retain a servant.
By 1861 all David and Mary's children had left home, and they were living together at the Smiths Shop in Breachwood Green. Mary died in 1868, aged 60.
David married again in 1870, when he was about 60 years old. His second wife was Sarah Rachel Fuller from Biggleswade in Bedfordshire, and she was only 19 when they married. She was younger than even the youngest of David's children from his first marriage. David and Sarah appear together in the 1871 and 1881 censuses living at Breachwood Green. They appear to have had two children together. In the 1870s two of David's children from his first marriage died as young adults; Sarah in 1874 and Daniel in 1875. Of David's children from his first marriage, only Frederick is known to have outlived his father.
David died on 21st November 1886 at Breachwood Green. Sarah outlived him by over 46 years and married again in 1895.
