Elizabeth Hill was born on 4th December 1834 at King's Walden in Hertfordshire, daughter of Mary Hill, formerly Marshall, and her husband David Hill, a plait dealer. She appears in the 1841 and 1851 censuses in Breachwood Green living with her parents and siblings. In 1853, aged 18, she married a gardener named James Robottom, who was about 15 years older than her. They had one daughter, Lavinia, in 1855. The 1861 census finds them living at Breachwood Green with Elizabeth working as a plaiter. Ten years later, they were nearby at Brownings, just north-west of Breachwood Green.

Elizabeth died in 1874, aged only 39. James appears to have died in 1880 in London. Their daughter Lavinia appears in the 1881 census working as a servant at Little Offley, a couple of miles from Breachwood Green.
