George Marshall was baptised on 31st May 1818 at Kimpton in Hertfordshire. He was the son of Elizabeth Marshall, formerly Bent, and her husband William Marshall, an agricultural labourer. The family lived in the hamlet of Peters Green when George was born, but in the early 1820s moved to the neighbouring parish of King's Walden. George's mother died in 1826, when George was only seven years old.
The 1841 census finds George living with his father and some of his sisters at Diamond End in King's Walden. At this time George was working as an agricultural labourer.
In 1843 George married Miriam Philpot, who already had a four year old son to whom George acted as stepfather. George and Miriam settled at Breachwood Green, the largest village in King's Walden parish, where they appear to have had at least four children. By the time of the 1851 census George was working as a school master. Schooling in the village at that time was focussed more on teaching children how to plait straw for use in hat making which was the main local industry, with some reading taught alongside. A 'Plaiting School' was built in 1859,[11] and George appears to have spent the rest of his career working there.
In 1859, George's wife Miriam died, aged 38. The 1861 census finds George living at the Plaiting School with three children.
In 1862, George married again. His second wife was Mary Almond, whom he would have known for many years already, as she had lived next door to him at Diamond End in the 1841 census, although she was fourteen years younger than him. They did not married in the Breachwood Green area but at Holloway in the northern suburbs of London. They do not appear to have had any more children. The 1871 census finds them back in Breachwood Green with George working as a school master at the Plaiting School.
In 1876 the school was taken over by the local education board; education had become compulsory and the emphasis shifted away from teaching plaiting towards more formal education. The old Plaiting School buildings became Breachwood Green School, which still uses the buildings today. George seems to have retired around this time; the 1881 census finds him still in Breachwood Green, but described as a retired school master.
Mary died in 1890, aged 57. George then moved to live with his daughter Emily, who had married and moved to the nearby town of Luton. George appears in the 1891 census living with her.
George died in Luton on 27th February 1894, aged 75.
