Phoebe Marshall was baptised on 26th November 1815 at Kimpton in Hertfordshire, daughter of Elizabeth Marshall, formerly Bent, and her husband William Marshall, an agricultural labourer. The family lived in the hamlet of Peters Green when Phoebe was born, but later moved to the neighbouring parish of King's Walden. Phoebe's mother died in 1826.
In 1839, Phoebe was married in the nearby town of Luton to a widower named Isaac Smith, who had a daughter from his first marriage. Phoebe and Isaac went on to have at least another seven children together between 1840 and 1855. Back in King's Walden, Phoebe's father died in 1847.
The 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses each find Phoebe and Isaac living in the Back Street area of Luton. Isaac initially worked as a thatcher before becoming a bonnet blocker, whilst Phoebe worked as a bonnet sewer in Luton's hat industry. Isaac died in 1880. Phoebe survived him by nearly seven years, appearing in the 1881 census living at 27 John Street in Luton with her daughter and son-in-law.
Phoebe died in 1887, aged 71.
