Isaac Smith was baptised on 9th July 1814 at Luton in Bedfordshire, son of Ann and John Smith, a thatcher.

In 1836, aged 21, Isaac married Jemima Gibbs at the Abbey in St Albans, about ten miles south of Luton. They returned to Luton and had a daughter, but Jemima died in 1838 aged 23, leaving Isaac a widower with their daughter (also called Jemima) to look after.

The following year Isaac married again. His second wife was Phoebe Marshall. They appear to have had at least seven more children together between 1840 and 1855. The 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses each find the family living in the Back Street area of Luton. Isaac was described as a thatcher in 1841, following his father's trade, but he later became a bonnet blocker, working in Luton's hat industry. Phoebe worked as a bonnet sewer.

Isaac died in 1880, aged 65. Phoebe outlived him by nearly seven years.
