Maria Marshall was baptised on 25th February 1810 at Kimpton in Hertfordshire, daughter of Elizabeth Marshall, formerly Bent, and her husband William Marshall, an agricultural labourer. Maria's younger siblings' baptisms record that the family lived in the hamlet of Peters Green, and later moved to the neighbouring parish of King's Walden.
Maria's mother died in 1826, when Maria was only sixteen years old.
Maria was married in 1830 at King's Walden to James Mardell, a bricklayer. James and Maria appear to have had at least nine children together between 1831 and 1854. The censuses from 1841 to 1861 each find the family living at Breachwood Green, the largest village in the parish of King's Walden, with James working as a bricklayer, whilst Maria was a plaiter, presumably in the straw plaiting industry which dominated the area. Maria's father died in 1847 at The Heath, an adjoining hamlet to Breachwood Green.
James died in 1862, aged 53. Maria survived him by nearly twelve years, and appears in the 1871 census living with two of her children at Breachwood Green. She died in 1874, aged about 64.
