Sarah Marshall was baptised on 11th April 1824 at Kimpton in Hertfordshire, daughter of Elizabeth Marshall, formerly Bent, and her husband William Marshall, an agricultural labourer. The family had recently moved from the Peters Green area of Kimpton to the neighbouring parish of King's Walden, but Sarah was baptised back at Kimpton. When Sarah was about two years old, her mother died.
The 1841 census finds Sarah living with her father and some of her siblings at Diamond End in the parish of King's Walden. Her father died in 1847.
By 1851 Sarah was living in the nearby town of Luton, working as a sewer and lodging at a house in Lea Street with her niece Mary (her brother William's daughter), and with a Mary Biggs, who would go on to marry her nephew Joseph (William's son) in 1853.
On Christmas Eve 1853, aged 29, Sarah was married to a bricklayer called Henry Chapman.
Less than seven months later, Sarah died, aged 30. She was buried on 10th July 1854 at the General Cemetery in Luton. Henry emigrated to Canada the following year.
