Sophia Marshall was born some time around 1812 at Kimpton in Hertfordshire, daughter of Elizabeth Marshall, formerly Bent, and her husband William Marshall, an agricultural labourer.[8] The family lived in the hamlet of Peters Green until the early 1820s when they moved a short distance into the neighbouring parish of King's Walden. Sophia's mother died in 1826.
In 1831, Sophia was married to a John Angell at King's Walden. They appear to have had eight children together between 1831 and 1851. The 1841 census finds them living at the hamlet of Diamond End in King's Walden parish with Sophia's father. They later moved around various villages in the area. Their first two children's births were recorded at the Coleman's Green Baptist Church in King's Walden. Most of their other children were baptised in 1848 and 1849 at Ayot St Lawrence. Sophia's father died in 1847.
Sophia worked as a straw plaiter, whilst John worked as an agricultural labourer and shepherd. In each census from 1861 onwards John and Sophia were living in the parish of Offley, living at the hamlet of Tea Green in 1861 and Mangrove in 1881.
John appears to have died in the Hitchin Union Workhouse in 1886, aged 72. He was buried in the churchyard back in Offley. Sophia survived him by less than a year. She died in 1887 and was buried at Offley on 24th October 1887.

It is presumed that the 'Harris Angell, son' must be a mishearing for their daughter Alice Angell, who was this age but not recorded, whereas there is no other sighting for a Harris Angell in this family.

Although Mary's age is clearly given as 2, this is presumed to be an error; she was 9. Her birth was registered in 1851 and in the 1871 census she was correctly described as being 19.

- ↑ Whilst no baptism has been found for Sophia, several pieces of evidence point to her being William and Elizabeth's daughter. Specifically, Sophia's husband John Angell witnessed the marriage of William Marshall junior (her presumed brother) in 1830, and in the 1841 census Sophia and her husband John were living in the same house as William Marshall senior (her presumed father). The various censuses in which the adult Sophia appears all suggest she was born around 1812 in Kimpton. There is a gap in the sequence of baptisms for William and Elizabeth's children at Kimpton between 1810 and 1815, which is a big enough gap for there to have been another child who either was not baptised or whose baptism was omitted. The Sophia Marshall baptised in Redbourn in 1815 to parents John and Ruth (who had previously lived in Kimpton) was not the Sophia who married John Angell, as that Sophia married a Reuben Allen in 1841 and can be found in the 1851 census living with him at Markyate. William and Elizabeth also moved from Kimpton to King's Walden, which the Sophia who married John Angell also did - consistently saying she was born in Kimpton but marrying and having her first few children in King's Walden. The Bishop's Transcripts for Kimpton for 1804-1814 (in which period there are no missing years) have been checked and no baptism found there either.
