Advisory on John Davis

This John Davis is thought by some researchers to be a son of Robert Davis and Anne Pickens, but Robert Davis did not name a son John in his will. Other researchers have placed him as a probable son of Nathaniel Davis, who also migrated to Augusta County, Virginia in the early 1740's. There is an account of three Davis brothers, John, Nathaniel and Samuel that migrated to Virginia. Both Nathaniel and Samuel are sons of Nathaniel Davis, this John is assumed to be the other brother.

To add to the confusion, Capt. John Davis had sons named Robert AND Nathaniel. More research is necessary to definitively prove the parentage of Capt. John Davis.

• Page 165.--16th November, 1768. John Davis' bond (with Halbert McCluer, Hugh Cunningham) as guardian to John, Daniel and Michael Higins, orphans of Daniel Higins.

• Vol. 1 - NOVEMBER 16, 1768. - (482) John Davis appointed guardian of Mary, John, Daniel and Michael Higgins, orphans of Daniel Higgins.

Mrs. Ivie McNees, "Davis Records," National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Volume XXII, No. 2 (June 1934): 36. Transcribed entry from religious record printed in 1768 lists John and Mary Davis's dates of birth followed by the names and dates of birth for each of their children (also John's first child from his second marriage). The NGS submission included an annotation, presumably by Mrs. McNees that stated: "John Davis md. 1st Mary Allison; md 2nd Mary Curry (said to be a widow) in 1786."
