Not to be confused with another John Caldwell that died and left his will in 1797 in Augusta County, with wife Catherine "Caty" and several children. Some researchers have confused the two John Caldwell's.

- Vol. 2, Page 179.--25th August, 1790. John Caldwell's will, planter--To son, James; to daughters, Sarah, Mary, Fenny*, Annas; to wife, Jane; to sons, John, Thomas, Samuel. Executors, wife Jane and son John. Teste: Abraham Larew, Peter and Elizabeth Larew. Proved, July Court, 1795, by Abraham and Peter. Presented in court by Jane.
- - Note: "Fenny" named in the will of John Caldwell actually appears to have been Fanny Davis, a daughter-in-law of John Caldwell, she was the first wife of his son John, as proven in Augusta County marriage records.
