Often Confused With:

James Walker m. Ann McClintock (First cousin to James. Confusingly also had a wife named Ann and died at a similar time)

Overview

James Walker was the brother of Samuel Walker, joining him on his journey to Moon's Creek, Caswell County, North Carolina from Newville, Pennsylvania. Conincidental with Samuel and his uncle William Walker, a James Walker appears on the Newville Tax records until 1763 when all three disappear. However, it is uncertain whether the record refers to him or his father who also is named James. Further confusing the situation, James's first cousin James Walker also migrated to North Carolina and settled just across the county border in present day Rockingham County. Both men died at a similar time, and both had a wife named Ann. However, these were two separate individuals. They had separate parcels of land, and they both had a distinct set of children. While James's first cousin left a will, the probate record of the James on this page has been lost to time. His death is mentioned in a 1802 court record as a "demise"[1]. Given that his probate record is lost, identifying the children of James is challenging. It appears that he had a large number of children, and he likely had at least two spouses over his lifetime. He is most likely the James Walker who married John Johnston's daughter Isabella. However, Isabella likely died sometime before 1780, as land transactions later indicated James had married a woman named Ann. His large number of children also suggests multiple spouses. Given the lack of records, great care must be taken to identify his children. However, surviving records can piece together a tentative list from most to least certain. Records directly state that Robert and James were children. Records do not directly state, but strongly suggest that Alexander, David, and Daniel were also children. William and Joseph are also possible but somewhat less certain. James likely also had daughters, but the search for them is ongoing:

James Walker.
Born 1755 in Pennsylvania. This man is a proven son, as he specifically referred as "James Jr." in Caswell tax records. Later moved back to Newville, Pennsylvania where he appears in the tax records briefly in the late 1780's. He moved to Rockingham, Virginia and finally to Adams County, Ohio. YDNA tests put him in Walker DNA Group 33, consistent with this family.
Robert Walker.
Born 1777 in Caswell, North Carolina. This is the second proven son, as his death record in Butler County, Kentucky indicates his parents were John and Isabella Walker in Caswell County, North Carolina. Surviving records suggest he migrated with his brother Daniel Walker to South Carolina, Missouri, and Kentucky.
Alexander Walker.
Born in the 1760's in Caswell, North Carolina. YDNA matches Walker DNA Group 33. Records do not directly state who his father was, but surviving records strongly suggest it was James. Court records show that James Walker was involved in a lawsuit with a Lewis Pike. James died in the middle of the court case. In the same session, Alexander Walker sued Lewis Pike for slander[2]Furthermore, Alexander bought land from James, and the land at his death was part of James's original land grant. He most was likely named after Alexander Johnson, a brother of Isabella Johnson. Like the name Daniel, Alexander was generally not used for children in Walker Group 33 (except for ?), so this name likely came from the mother's family.
David Walker.
Born around 1780 in Caswell, North Carolina. Like Alexander and Daniel, records do not directly state who his father was, but surviving records also suggest it was James. James directly gifted some of his land to David before his death, and this land was directly adjacent to Alexander's
Daniel Walker.
Born in the early 1760's in Caswell, North Carolina. Records do not directly state who his father was, but he appears on the tax list alongside James in 1784. YDNA matches Walker DNA Group 33, and he is most likely named after Isabella's brother Daniel Johnson. Daniel was generally not used for children in Walker Group 33, so this name likely came from the mother's family. Took the same migrate route as his brother Robert.
William Walker.
Born in 1768. Direct neighbor to the rest of the tentative children in this list. Was a wheelwright, an occupation shared by others in this immediate family.
Joseph Walker.
Born around 1775. Direct neighbor to the rest of the tentative children in this list.
