About Griffith Evans

Griffeth Evans was born sometime prior to 1743, prob. close to abt. 1735-40, likely in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He was a son of John Evans of Loudoun County, Virginia and was named co-Executor in his father's will. The name of Griffeth's wife is currently not known, but he must have been married sometime prior to 1766 when his likely son Griffith, Jr. was born. likely in Loudoun County, Virginia where his father had migrated prior to 1760. Griffeth also had a daughter Elizabeth "Betey" Evans born abt. 1769 who married George Craig (1749-1801) on 16 Dec. 1790 in Augusta County, Virginia [Virginia Marriage Records].

Griffeth acquired a 1,003 acre tract of land in Loudoun County, Virginia in 1763 near Sugarland Run Lick, likely close where his father John Evans's land was located. He apparently migrated to the area of Augusta County that became Greenbrier County, Virginia [later West Virginia], prior to abt. 1783, when Court records show he was involved in a lawsuit against James McGonegal and his wife Margaret. Marriage records in Augusta County show Griffith Evans provided surety for his daughter Elizabeth who married George Craig on 16 December 1790 in Augusta County, by Rev. William Wilson. George Craig's will written in 1795 also shows that Griffeth Evans also had two other daughters, Peggy and Polly, who George Craig named as his sisters-in-law. In addition, Augusta County marriage records show that Griffith Evans' daughter Sally married a James Campbell on 7 January 1800, also married by Rev. William Wilson.

Griffeth's likely son Griffith Evans (1767-1840), married Martha McNeel 1791 in Greenbrier County, and later migrated to Champaign County, Ohio where he died abt. 1840. listed on Find-A-Grave

Griffeth Evans died intestate prior to February 1814 in Greenbrier County, Virginia, when his Estate Inventory was admitted to record. The name of his widow and children were unfortunately not listed in the records.

Given that John McDowell and his father-in-law Robert Witherow are together in the same tax district at the time of John's marriage and thereafter, what about Griffith Evans, John's security on the marriage bond?
It is likely that Griffith Evans is a brother — or certainly a relative — of Elizabeth Evans, the putative wife of Robert Witherow Senior. Griffith's property tax listings are shown in the following table.

    BY DR. THOMAS COWGILL.
Since writing the foregoing pages, I have learned that, in the year 1810, Griffith Evans and Martha Evans, his wife, with a few children, emigrated from Greenbrier 'County, Va., and settled near the site of Mount Tabor, on a large tract of excellent land that he previously bought from the owner, Alexander Dunlap, in Virginia.
