About Griffith Evans

Griffith Evans was born 2 September 1767 [gravestone calculation] likely Loudoun County, Virginia. He is likely a son of Griffeth Evans who lived in an area of Augusta County, Virginia that later became Greenbrier County, [West] Virginia, and died there intestate in 1814. He may have been the Griffith Evans listed in the 1810 U.S. Census in nearby Bath County, Virginia. The age range listed in that census record is between 1766-1784, and living with several children under age 16, which appears to coincide with this Griffith Evans. After the death of his likely father, Griffith Evans migrated to Champaign County, Ohio.

Griffith Evans married Martha McNeel on 16 March 1791 in Greenbrier County, Virginia according to Virginia marriage records. They had several children likely born there [and possibly in nearby Bath County] during the 1790's and early 1800's before they sought refuge out of Virginia. In the "History of Champaign County, Ohio, 1881, pg. 519" it refers to Griffith Evans and his eldest son Isaac Evans living there in the around Salem Township in about 1824, so we can safely assume Griffith was living there prior to that date. Griffith Evans wrote his will in 1836 and it was proven 1840 in Court there.
