Emily Grant was baptised on 2nd July 1826 at Sidlesham in Sussex, daughter of Mary Grant, formerly Chaffer, and her husband Charles Grant, who worked at different times as a labourer, blacksmith and fisherman.

By the time of the 1841 census, Emily was working as a domestic servant at Rose Farm in Donnington, not far from Sidlesham. Three years later, aged 18, she was married at Donnington to an agricultural labourer named Edmund Woolvin. They then moved to the nearby parish of North Mundham, where they lived for many years in the hamlet of Brinfast. They had ten children between 1845 and 1867, although their first two children (who were twins) died before they could be named. Their daughter Ann also died as a baby in 1861, whilst their daughter Eliza died aged 16 in 1867, leaving six children who appear to have survived childhood. Emily and Edmund also brought up a granddaughter named Ellen, who was only a year younger than their youngest daughter, Elizabeth.

Edmund died in 1891, aged 71. Emily outlived him by ten years and died in 1901, aged 75.
