Harriet Grant was baptised on 10th February 1828 at Sidlesham in Sussex, daughter of Mary Ann Grant, formerly Chaffer, and her husband Charles Grant, a labourer and later fisherman. Harriet appears in the 1841 census living with her parents and siblings at the hamlet of Mill in Sidlesham parish.

Harriet was married on 15th May 1847, aged 19, to a fisherman named William Binstead, who was originally from the neighbouring parish of Pagham. They married and settled in Sidlesham, living at Mill, very close to Harriet's parents. They had a daughter named Harriet in 1848 and a son named Alfred in 1851. The 1851 census finds them living at Mill in Sidlesham.

In 1855 they had a son named William baptised at Sidlesham, but he died as a young boy when he was only two years old in 1857. There was then quite a gap before the couple had any more children; their next child, Edward James, was baptised in 1864, a full nine years after William's baptism. He was then followed by Walter in 1867.

Harriet's father Charles died in 1870, and her mother Mary Ann died in 1879.

The 1871 census finds William working as a hawker of fish rather than a fisherman - perhaps as he got older he chose not to go to sea any more. In 1891 he was described as a postman, whilst in 1901 he was both "fish hawker and postal letter carrier". In each census from 1851 to 1901 he and Harriet were living at Mill in Sidlesham (the 1871 census does not give the address, but it is clear from the sequence of neighbours that they are in the same house as in 1861).

Harriet died in 1910, aged 82. William outlived her by six years and died in 1916, aged 90 years old.
