William Grant was baptised on 16th February 1823 at Sidlesham in Sussex, son of Mary Ann Grant, formerly Chaffer, and her husband Charles Grant, a blacksmith and later fisherman. The 1841 census finds William living with his parents and siblings at Sidlesham. In 1849, aged 26, William married a widow named Jane Green, who was thirteen years his senior and already had seven children from her first marriage, the eldest of whom was only five years younger than William. William and Jane appear together in the 1851 census with a number of her children, living at Sidlesham next door to William's parents. William by this time was working as a fisherman.

William and Jane appear to have had two children together during the 1850s. By 1861, William was the Crab and Lobster public house at Sidlesham. He died the following year, aged just 39. Jane outlived him by nearly 23 years, and seems to have spent much of the remainder of her life living in Portsmouth, a few miles west of Sidlesham.
