Jane Clear was baptised on 22nd April 1810 at Sidlesham in Sussex, daughter of John and Frances Clear. She was married on Christmas Day 1827, aged 17, to a fisherman and labourer called Henry Green, also known as James Green. They married at the nearby parish of Earnley, but returned to Jane's native Sidlesham where they had seven children between 1828 and 1845.
James Green died in 1848, aged 48. The following year Jane married again. Her second husband was also a fisherman, named William Grant. He was nearly 13 years her junior; when they married she was 39 and he was 26. They stayed in Sidlesham and had two children during the 1850s, giving Jane nine children altogether from her two marriages. The 1861 census finds Jane and William living at the Crab and Lobster public house in Sidlesham, with William described as a fisherman and publican. William died the following year, aged just 39.
After William's death, Jane went to live in Portsmouth, a few miles west of Sidlesham. She appears there in the 1871 census with her youngest daughter. By 1881 she was living alone in Portsmouth.
Jane died in 1885, aged 75.
