Mary Ann Grant was baptised on 28th October 1821 at Sidlesham in Sussex, daughter of Mary Ann Grant, formerly Chaffer, and her husband Charles Grant, a labourer. She appears in the 1841 census working as a servant at an inn in the nearby city of Chichester. In 1845 she married a Daniel King at Chichester. By 1851 they were living at Hove, where Daniel was working as a brickmaker's labourer and had four children.
By 1861 they had moved back to Chichester, where both Daniel and Mary were working for the railways: Daniel as a porter and Mary as a gate keeper. They had nine children living with them. They were still in Chichester come 1871, when Daniel was working as a signalman. In total, Mary and Daniel appear to have had twelve children together.
Some time between 1871 and 1881 they left Chichester and moved to Brighton, where they appear in both the 1881 and 1891 censuses. Daniel worked again as an outside porter for the railway. Mary appears to have died some time between 1891 and 1901, as Daniel appears as a widower in the 1901 census. The most likely candidate for her death is in the Westhampnett district of Sussex (covering the Sidlesham area where she'd been born) in 1900, aged 78.
