Joseph Grant was baptised on 14th March 1824 at Sidlesham in Sussex, son of Mary Grant, formerly Chaffer, and her husband Charles Grant, who worked at different times as a labourer, blacksmith and fisherman. Joseph appears in the 1841 census living with his parents and siblings at the hamlet of Mill in Sidlesham parish.

In 1850, aged about 26, Joseph married a Sarah Farrow. Early the following year they had a daughter, Emily, baptised at Sidlesham. The 1851 census finds Joseph, Sarah and baby Emily living at Mill in Sidlesham, and describes Joseph as a fisherman. Joseph died four months later, being buried at Sidlesham on 30th July 1851. He was 27 years old.

He left behind Sarah as a nineteen year old widow with a seven month old baby to support. Sarah has yet to be traced after Joseph's death, but young Emily went to live with Joseph's parents.
