Sarah Farrow was baptised on 18th September 1831 at Sidlesham in Sussex, daughter of James and Phoebe Farrow. Her baptism describes her father as a labourer and says that the family lived at the hamlet of Highley in Sidlesham parish. Sarah appears in the 1841 census living with her father and siblings still living at Highley.

In 1850, aged 18, Sarah married a fisherman named Joseph Grant, who was also from Sidlesham. In January 1851 they had a daughter named Emily baptised at Sidlesham. The 1851 census finds Sarah, Joseph and baby Emily living at the hamlet of Mill in Sidlesham.

Joseph died later in 1851, leaving Sarah as a young widow of nineteen years old. She has yet to be traced after 1851. By the time of the 1861 census her daughter Emily was living with Joseph's parents.
