Facts and Events
Name Columbus Asa ALEXANDER, Sr.
Gender Male
Birth? 1846 Coffee County, Alabama
Marriage 22 Jan 1875 Alabamato Florida Virginia Berry
Medical? My mother said he had a history of kidney problems but I wonder if he also could have had an undiagnosed heart problem. Mother had congestive heart failure. What is "dropsy"?
Death? 12 Sep 1897 Geneva, Geneva County, Alabama, United States

1846 - His birth date from the census 1880, Bullock Co., Alabama, p48, also agrees with the 1846 date my mother told me. Tombstone in Geneva Cemetery says he was b1857-- which is wrong. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in Jan. 1864; he would have been only 7 yrs. old if he'd been born in 1857. He was said to be 44 yrs of age when my mother was born 1 Jul 1889: her delayed birth certificate (file no. 337) showing this is from Geneva Co. Court House.

1864, Jan 1 He enlisted in Montgomery Co. as a private in the Confederate Army, Company A, 63rd Regiment Alabama Infantry, (2nd Alabama Res.) He served as orderly for Gen. Withers Jul 1, 1894: Letter from Alabama Dept of Archives and Civil War Muster Rolls, Box 000374, Extraction # 001, Record # 00001592--Ancestry.com. See pension claim of widow, and letter from Dept. of Archives, Alabama.

1867, Jan 24 - I have an original letter he wrote from Montgomery, Alabama after he had served in the Civil War and before he married--lots of talk about "girls". It is addressed to "Dear Cousin", a male; It was given to me by Katherine A. Mims who is descended through Ezekiel (brother of Asa C. Alexander, Jr.) and his son Moses who was 10 years older than Columbus A. Alexander.

1875, Jan 22 - marriage: my mother's notes.

1892, Jun 10 - He bought 120.250 acres of land, Stephen's Base Line, Twp IN, Range 22E, section 20, at the Montgomery, Alabama Land Office, doc. #10974, Misc. doc. no1754, issue date: Jun 1 1892, Entry Classification: Homestead Entry Original . I am not sure of the actual location of this property.

1897, Sep 12 - death: tombstone, City Cemetery in Geneva, Alabama plus a document from Masonic Lodge in Geneva, Ala. where he served as Worshipful Master.

residence: Geneva, Ala., birth and death;Montgomery, Alabama in 1867; Bullock Co., Alabama. in 1880 (census).

occupation: saloon owner in Geneva, Alabama sometime after Civil War - "Pea River Trails", Vol. 17, #1, 1992, p25; bookkeeper C.F. Latimer & Sons (note the name below of S. F. Latimer) in Geneva, Alabama(no date)-worksheet of Marie A. French, granddaughter raised in his hometown. Dr. S. F. Latimer arrived in Geneva with a family in 1880. His son, Sidney Franklin Latimer, Jr. was owner of a mercantile and a hardware store and several farms. He must have been the employer of C.A. Alexander, bookkeeper - "Geneva, Alabama, A History" p237.

Died of kidney failure--long standing problem for which he went to New Orleans, LA for treatment according to my mother. They were unable to help him. Could it have been related to his heart?- fluid retention from congestive heart failure? I believe at least three children died of heart problems. My mother died of congestive heart failure. I've wondered if his child Cullen ORLEANS, b 1885, might have been conceived there?
