William Horton was baptised on 15th October 1810 at North Mundham in Sussex, son of Elizabeth Horton, formerly Edwards, and her husband John Horton, an agricultural labourer. William was the eldest of the couple's nine children. In 1813 the couple's second child was also baptised at North Mundham, with his baptism indicating that the family lived in the hamlet of Runcton. Some time between 1813 and 1814 the family moved to the nearby village of Merston.
William married when he was 25 to a Harriet Port, who was from Heyshott, a few miles inland. They married at Pagham, on the coast, where they went on to have several children over the next few years. Harriet also had a daughter born in 1832 who appears with them in the 1841 census, when they were living at Aldwick in the east of the parish of Pagham, near the seaside town of Bognor. By 1851 they had moved to Nyetimber in the west of the parish. William worked as an agricultural labourer and carter.
In 1861 they were living the opposite side of Pagham Harbour at Sidlesham. In 1871 they were a little way inland at Merston, and in 1881 they were in South Bersted, the parish which contained Bognor.
Harriet died aged 71, and was buried at South Bersted on 25th January 1883. William survived her by about twenty years, appearing in the 1891 census at Westhampnett Union Workhouse just outside Chichester. That workhouse burned down in 1899 and its inmates were transferred to the Chichester Workhouse, where William appears in the 1901 census.
William died in 1903, aged 92.
