George Horton was baptised on 13th April 1823 at Merston in Sussex, son of Elizabeth Horton, formerly Edwards, and her husband John Horton, an agricultural labourer. The 1841 census finds George living with his parents and siblings at Merston.
In 1849, aged 26, George married Harriet Thorpe, who was from the nearby city of Chichester. They settled in Chichester after their marriage, having at least four children together. George worked as an agricultural labourer. The 1851 census finds the family living on Theatre Lane.
George's parents died less than a year apart; his father in 1859 and his mother in 1860.
The 1861 census finds George, Harriet and their children at St Pancras Street in Chichester.
George died in 1870, aged 47. He was buried at St Pancras Church in Chichester on 22nd July 1870. After his death Harriet appears in the 1871 census still living on St Pancras Street with three children, the youngest of whom must have been born about the time George died. Harriet survived George by just under 17 years.
