Charles Horton was baptised on 3rd July 1825 at Merston in Sussex, son of Elizabeth Horton, formerly Edwards, and her husband John Horton, an agricultural labourer. Charles appears in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses living with his parents and siblings in Merston. By 1851 he was working as an agricultural labourer, like his father.

Charles's parents died less than a year apart; his father in 1859 and his mother in 1860. The 1861 census finds Charles living with an elderly widow named Elizabeth Phillips in Merston. The 1871 census finds Charles living with his eldest brother William and William's wife Harriet. Charles does not appear to have ever married.

Charles moved to Binsted, about nine miles east of Merston, when he appears in the 1881 census living with a shepherd and his wife. Charles died aged about 60, being buried at Binsted on 2nd July 1885.
