Elizabeth Horton was baptised on 6th April 1828 at Merston in Sussex, daughter of Elizabeth Horton, formerly Edwards, and her husband John Horton, an agricultural labourer. Elizabeth appears in the 1841 census living with her parents and siblings in Merston. By 1851 Elizabeth appears to have left home and been working as a general servant in the nearby city of Chichester.

On 29th May 1852, aged 24, Elizabeth married an agricultural labourer named Thomas Ayling at Merston. They appear to have had at least five children together, and moved around the nearby villages of Oving, Tangmere and Boxgrove. Elizabeth's parents died less than a year apart; her father in 1859 and her mother in 1860.

Thomas was buried at Boxgrove on 2nd October 1874, when he was said to be 54 years old. Elizabeth survived him by less than three months, being buried at Boxgrove on 16th December 1875, aged 46.
