Thomas Ayling's origins have yet to be established. He claimed in both the 1861 and 1871 censuses to have been born around 1820 in West Dean in Sussex. His first confirmed sighting is on 29th May 1852 when he married Elizabeth Horton at Merston, near Chichester.

Thomas worked as an agricultural labourer. Thomas and Elizabeth appear to have had at least five children together, moving around varous villages in western Sussex: Oving, Tangmere and Boxgrove.

Thomas died in 1874, being buried at Boxgrove on 2nd October 1874. He was said to be 54 years old when he died. Elizabeth survived him by less than three months.
