John Horton was baptised on 16th March 1783 at Heyshott in Sussex, son of Elizabeth Horton, formerly Budd, and her husband William Horton. Two years later William and Elizabeth had a daughter baptised in the neighbouring parish of Cocking, which John would later claim was his birthplace.
John was married aged 26 on 30th July 1809 to Elizabeth Edwards at Pagham in Sussex. At the time of their marriage he was living in the neighbouring parish of North Mundham.
After their marriage John and Elizabeth lived for a time in North Mundham, having their first two sons baptised there. Their second son's baptism describes John as a labourer and records that the family lived in the hamlet of Runcton. Some time between 1813 and 1814 they moved to the neighbouring parish of Merston, where they were to settle, having another seven children baptised there between 1814 and 1830. The 1841 census finds them living in Merston with their four younger children and a grandson, Henry. John was described as an agricultural labourer. By 1851 they had two of their children and their grandson Henry living with them.
John was buried at Merston on 21st August 1859, when he was 76 years old. Elizabeth survived him by less than a year.

1783 / John Son of William & Elizabeth Horton baptized March 16th
Whilst no named connection has been found, this baptism has been linked to the John Horton who married Elizabeth Edwards on the basis that in the 1851 census he claimed to be born at Cocking in about 1783. There does not appear to be a John Horton baptism at Cocking around that time, but there is this baptism in the neighbouring parish of Heyshott, plus the family went on to have a daughter (Hannah) baptised at Cocking two years later, explaining why John may have thought he was from Cocking rather than Heyshott. His parents' marriage in 1779 (at Heyshott) also gives his mother's abode as Cocking, showing their connection to Cocking was well-established. No evidence has been found to suggest that the John baptised at Heyshott in 1783 died young or married anyone other than Elizabeth Edwards.
