Charlotte Horton was baptised on 13th June 1819 at Merston in Sussex, daughter of Elizabeth Horton, formerly Edwards, and her husband John Horton, an agricultural labourer. Charlotte was the fifth of their nine children.
The 1841 census finds Charlotte living with her eldest brother William and his family at Aldwick in the parish of Pagham, close to the seaside town of Bognor.
In 1842, aged 23, Charlotte married an agricultural labourer named Charles Davis. He was from Tangmere, just north of Merston. They settled at Tangmere after their marriage, having several children there. The 1851 census finds Charlotte, Charles and their children living in Tangmere with Charles's father living with them.
Back in Merston, Charlotte's parents died less than a year apart; her father in 1859 and her mother in 1860.
The 1861 and 1871 censuses also find Charles and Charlotte living in Tangmere, with their address given variously as "Chichester & Arundel" and Arundel Road - presumably they lived on the turnpike road from Chichester to Arundel (later the A27) which skirts the northern edge of the parish.
In 1871 Charlotte is mentioned as wife of the prosecutor in a case of theft, where a John Davis stole a shirt worth three shillings from Charles whilst Charlotte had left it out to dry.
Charlotte died aged 58, being buried at Tangmere on 4th December 1877. Charles survived her by 25 years.

Needs to be confirmed at West Sussex Record Office. Whilst no named connection has been found, this baptism has been linked to the Charlotte Horton who married Charles Davis on the basis that in the censuses after marriage Charlotte consistently claimed to have been born at Merston around 1819. No evidence has been found to suggest that the Charlotte baptised at Merston in 1819 died young or married anyone other than Charles Davis.
