Harriet Thorpe was baptised on 16th December 1828 at Chichester in Sussex, daughter of a cordwainer named William Thrope and his wife Catherine. The 1841 census finds Harriet living with her parents at Southgate in Chichester.
In 1849, aged about 21, Harriet married an agricultural labourer named George Horton, who was from the village of Merston, just outside Chichester. They settled in Chichester after their marriage, having at least four children together. The 1851 census finds them living on Theatre Lane, after which they moved to St Pancras Street, where they appear in the 1861 census.
George died in 1870, aged 47. After his death Harriet appears in the 1871 census still living on St Pancras Street with three children, the youngest of whom must have been born about the time George died.
Harriet was still at St Pancras Street in 1881. She died in 1887, aged 58, having survived George by nearly 17 years.
