Harriet Port or Poat was baptised on 6th October 1811 at Heyshott in Sussex, daughter of James and Jane. When Harriet was twenty years old she had a daughter named Caroline, baptised at Heyshott in 1832.
Harriet was married on 2nd May 1836, aged 24, to a carter and agricultural labourer named William Horton. He was from North Mundham, the other side of Chichester. They married at Pagham, right on the coast. For the first few years after their marriage they stayed in Pagham, having several children there. The 1841 census finds them living at Aldwick in the east of the parish near the seaside town of Bognor. By 1851 they had moved to Nyetimber in the west of the parish.
In 1861 they were living the opposite side of Pagham Harbour at Sidlesham. In 1871 they were a little way inland at Merston, and in 1881 they were in South Bersted, the parish which contained Bognor.
Harriet died aged 71, and was buried at South Bersted on 25th January 1883. William survived her by about twenty years.

ch. 6 Oct 1811, Heyshott, Sussex: Harriet daughter of James & Jane Poat
This baptism has been linked to the Harriet Port who married William Horton on the basis that in the censuses the adult Harriet Horton consistently gave her place of birth as Heyshott and ages suggesting she was born around 1811. There was also a 'Caroline Poat' illegitimate daughter of Harriet Poat baptised at Heyshott in 1832 who will presumably be the 'Caroline Horton' who appears in the 1841 census living with Harriet and William Horton. No evidence has been found to suggest that the Harriet baptised in 1811 died young or married anyone other than William Horton.
