Thomas ( ) Shanklin, Sr., to Thomas Shanklin, Jr., his son, £20, two tracts, one containing 100 acres, 80 acres of which is part of 400 patented to James Wood, 12th January, 1746, on branch of Muddy Creek; corner John Shanklin's land; the other tract containing 80 acres patented to Thomas Shanklin, Sr., June, 1755, on branches of Muddy Creek; O'Neal's land, John Fulton's line. Will Transcript

In the name of God amen the fifteenth day of April one thousand seven hundred & seventy four I Thomas Shankland of Augusta County and Colony of Virginia Farmer being sick and Weake in Body but of Perfect mind and Memory thanks be given to God & knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my last will and Testament that is to say Principally and first of all I give and Recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it and for my body I recommend it to the Earth to be buried and Christian like and decent Manner at the discretion of my Executors nothin[g] doubting but at the General Resurrection I shall receive this and again by the Mighty Power of God and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath Pleased God to bless me in this life I give and devise and dispose of the same in the following Manner and form Imprimis it is my Will & I order that all my Just debts and funeral Charges in the first Place be paid & Satisfied.

Item I give and bequeath unto Elenor my dearly beloved Wife her Choice of the Cows that is to say five of them to be hers and all my household furniture and all the Grain I have in or on the Plantation I live on and all that tract of land I have Joining Thomas Gordons land to be her Property forever also the third of the Plantation I live on and all that tract of land I have Joining Thomas Gordons land to her Property during her life and also my Grey Marre & her side Saddle to be her Property forever & if any Mistortune befall the horse she is to have the mare also & my Servant to be heirs Likewise and the land Joining Thomas Gordon after her decease to dispose of in the following Manner that is to say to have it sold to the best Advantage & the money to the Amount of fourty Pounds to be divided Among my Grand Children in the following Manner. Viz of my son Roberts Children Thomas, William & Robert to have ten Pounds for their share divided among them and to my son John(s) son ten Pounds and Thomas[s] son Thomas to have Twenty Pounds and the remainder to be devided equally among my own Children allowing my oldest son Robert four Shillings Sterling more than any of the rest and what Remains of my Moveables after my Wife hath what is Mentioned to her to be divided as above among my own Children & I Constitute & Ordain my sons Robert and John my only & Sole Executors of this my last Will and Testament and I do hereby utterly disallow Revoke and disannul all and every other former Testaments Wills Legacies Executed by me in any way before this time named Willed and Bequeathed Ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my Last will & Testament.

This last Will & Testament of Thomas Shanklin deceased was proved by the Oaths of Archibald Hopkins and George Baxter two of the Witnesses thereto and Ordered to be Recorded and on the motion of John Shanklin and Robert Shanklin the Executors therein named who made Oath According to Law Certificate is Granted them for Obtaining a Probat thereof in due form they haveing with Security entered into and Acknowledged their Bond According to Law.

Thomas Shankland's (his mark) will, farmer--To wife, Eleanor, tract adjoining Thomas Gordon; to grandchildren, viz: Of son Robert's children, viz: Thomas, William, Robert, son John, son _____; son Thomas' son Thomas; to oldest son, Robert. Executors, sons Robert and John. Teste: William and Archibald Hopkins, George Baxter. Proved, 17th January, 1775, by Archd. Hopkins and Baxter. Executors qualify with Archd. Hopkins, Geo. Baxter.

• Page 384.--1st February, 1775. Thomas Shanklin's estate appraised by Ephraim Love, John Hopkins, Jesse Harrison.

• Page 29.--13th October, 1787. Settlement of Thomas Shanklin's estate by John Shanklin, accounts in 1774, and by Robert Shanklin, accounts in 1786. 1774, paid John Fairbern; 1786, paid Elizabeth Shanklin, executrix of John Shanklin, deceased. Commissioners report there is a balance in hands of George Baxter, Thos. Shanklin, and Elizabeth Shanklin (widow), and of Robert Shanklin; all these persons are reported as executors by Andrew Shanklin, who acts for his father, Robert Shanklin.
