    Stephen Conkling, Sr., son of Joseph and Mary (Cory) Conkling was born about 1767 in Westfield (Essex County), New Jersey. He is listed on the Essex County Militia Roll of 1793. Stephen married Anna Crane in 1789 at the Westfield Presbyterian Church in Westfield, New Jersey. They were probably married either on November 29 or December 8 as the IGI shows this marriage as occurring on Nov. 29 and Dec. 8, 1789 .

By 1804 Stephen’s family had moved to Cincinnati, Ohio where his son Amos was born in December of that year. Stephen is listed on the Hamilton County Ohio 1807 ear mark list and is also listed as a Columbia Township taxpayer in 1808. Records from the Walnut Hills First Presbyterian Church Sabbath School in Cincinnati for 1821 show that his children Dayton, Martin, Spencer, and Sarah attended. Their ages are also given. Stephen died on 31 May 1826 in his 59th year. He is buried at the Mount Moriah Methodist Church cemetery in Withamsville (Clermont County), Ohio along with many family members including his wife, son Stephen, Stephen’s wife and son, Abner. His will names ten children.
