Telegraph Herald (Dubuque, IA) - June 13, 2001 Marie Maas Hoover, 84, of ManorCare Health Services, died at 7 p.m. Monday, June 11, 2001, at ManorCare. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Siegert-Didesch Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., where there will be a wake service at 4:30 p.m. She was born on Dec. 5, 1916, in Dubuque, daughter of John and Rose (Donovan) Barrett. She married Mel Maas Sr. in March 1934. Together they owned and operated Mel's Tavern from 1948 until 1957. Mr. Maas died in September 1958. She was a waitress at Lona's Tap from 1957 until retiring in 1977. In December 1963, she married John Hoover; he died in 1986. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. An avid Cubs fan, Marie also enjoyed playing bingo. She was affectionately known as "Pee Wee." Surviving are three sons, Mel (Shirley) Maas Jr. and Butch (Bernita) Maas, both of Dubuque, and Marty (Linda) Maas, of Asbury, Iowa; three daughters, Adele (Albert) Davis, Rose Marie Heinze and Marlene (Phillip) Mihalakis, all of Dubuque; 32 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Louis Barrett, of Dubuque. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Kramer; grandchildren, Brook, Robin, Kelly, Mary, Bette Jo and John Jr.; four brothers, Leo, Marty, John and Francis; and three sisters Rosetta, Margaret and Kate. A Marie Maas Hoover Memorial Fund has been established. Marie's family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff at ManorCare Health Services for all their wonderful care and support. |
