Facts and Events
John McAvoy was one of the Early Settlers of Augusta County, Virginia __________________________ [edit] About John McAvoyTradition says that John McAvoy was kidnapped with 14 other youths and put on a ship to America. He was sold to Robert Carlisle as an indentured servant who lived on the Bullpasture River before being sold to a man in eastern Va. & served as a weaver. In 1776 he moved to Bullpasture River before he completed his appreticeship. The man came looking for him and took him back. In about 1776, he married Frances "Fannie" Pritt, likely the daughter of Robert Pritt and sister of Edward Pritt of Bath County, VA. Several records link the McAvoy and Pritt families in the Augusta/Bath County, Virginia area. By 1777, his son Robert had been born & his wife "Fannie" walked many miles to be with John. The little family soon left when Fannie set her foot down. [Ancestry Trees]. That area of Virginia became part of Bath County, Virginia in 1790, and that is where John McAvoy's death occurred based upon court records of his Estate Inventory in 1798/99. John appears to be a likely sibling to Thomas McAvoy who left records in Augusta County, VA. Some Ancestry Trees claim that the parents of John McAvoy and Thomas McAvoy are John McAvoy and Sarah McMenemy, but the records for this couple in Scotland were in the mid-1800's, making them highly unlikely as John McAvoy's parents. Additional research and sources are needed to prove his parentage. [edit] Deeds in Virginia
