From "Carlile And Related Families, Augusta, Bath and Highland Counties Virginia 1745 to 1875" by Carol Watson and Frances Buchanan Arlington, 1994. "The two Roberts of this generation are difficult to separate in French and Indian War records; however, Robert of the Bullpasture always signed his mark. Two Roberts were listed as privates in Capt. George Wilson's Company 11 aug 1756. One was Robert of the Bullpasture; the other probably Robert (wife Esther) who moved later to Greenbrier County. Pay vouchers show Robert received 10.7.1 pounds for provisions for William Preston's company in Nov 1757, witness, Charles Lewis (Robert signed by mark). Robert received 11.0 shillings pay from the Virginia House of Burgesses for defense of the Frontier on 14 Sep 1758 (Hening, Vol. 7, pg 192) and 1.1.1 pounds for provisions for the militia. "Augusta County Land Records Books show Robert Carlyle, Sr. owned 150 acres in 1786 through 1790. In 1787 Robert Sr. was listed as a dependant of his son Robert Jr (Little) on the tithables list (Schreiner-Yantis, pg 129), but Robert Sr. did not legally deed his remaining land to Robert (Little) until 1794 (Morton, Highland, pg 168). This land was combined with the 150 acre parcel and legally deeded to his son Robert (Little) 4 July 1794, the same year that Robert Sr. wrote his will. Dated 4 Jul 1794, the will, was proved in Bath June Court 1802: Eldest son George Carlyle; eldest daughter (Elizabeth) Hicklin; second daughter Jane Graham; third daughter Rachel Peebles; second son Robert Carlyle, left the plantation on the Bullpasture.
