8. George Carlyle (Robert , James Sr. ) was born on 30 May 1756 in Bullpasture, Augusta Co., Virginia. He died on 27 May 1827 in , Woodford Co., Kentucky. He was buried in , Woodford Co., Kentucky.

Rev. soldier in Va.; listed in DAR Patriot Index-Centennial Edition, p. 489. It is believed that George served from Virginia and was wounded at the Battle of King's Mountain. Mary Dunlevy Berger of New York City, a descendant of George's daughter Elizabeth Carlyle Wallace, stated in her 1918 DAR application: "As a volunteer in the Virginia Troops while a soldier in the war of the revolution he (George Carlyle) was severely wounded in his right shoulder carrying the marks of a sabre wound all the remainder of his life. A living Grand Aunt of the applicant makes affadavit to knowledge of his service which she has heard from the lips of her mother the daughter of the aforementioned George Carlyle".

We have found no Rev. War records for George to this date.

GEORGE CARLYLE'S ANCESTRY:

"History of Woodford County, Kentucky", by William Railey, erroniously describes him as a son of John Carlyle and Sarah Fairfax of VA. This John Carlyle did, in fact, have a son named George William Carlyle, born 1765, by his second wife, Sybil West. However, that George Carlyle was nine years younger than our George and was killed as an unmarried teenager at the Battle of Eutaw Springs, SC on 8 Sep 1781. He was a member of Lee's Legion, enlisting the February before he was killed (Spencer; Stuntz). Gen. Henry "Lighthorse Harry" Lee, in his "Memoirs of the War in the Southern Department of the United States" (1827) wrote: "The gallant young Carlyle of Alexandria, a cadet in the Regiment, was killed and half the corps destroyed".

From "Kentucky Antebellum Portraiture", Edna Talbot Whitley, Nat. Soc. of Col. Dames in Amer. in the Commonwealth of Kent., 1956 - (p. 118) "He" (George) "was a son, either of John and Elizabeth Carlyle, or of Robert and Nancy Carlyle, two brothers who jointly patented a large tract of land on Bullpasture" (Augusta Co., Va.) "in 1758, and afterwards divided it with their children. In moving west to Kentucky, George Carlyle joined Augusta County neighbors, arriving in the fall of 1779."

AND THE REST OF THE STORY: After years of research and much pondering, this question regarding the parents of George Carlyle (Robert or John, etc), was answered to my satisfaction by the following information found in the article by Carol Watson & Frances Buchanan: "Carlile and Related Families Augusta, Bath" and Highland Counties Virginia 1745 to 1875..." page 71, which states:

"on the blank page facing page 123 in a copy of this book" ("Sermons To Young Women: In Two Volumes. The Sixth Edition. Vol l. London: Printed for D. Payne. M. DCC, LXVI (1766), by James Fordyce, D.D.) "found by Clay Hamilton in 1992 in the estate sale of Elsie Hamilton Folks, great-great-granddaughter of Christopher and Jean Carlile Graham, was the following information in one hand in the old style: Elizabeth Carlyle was Born Dec the 16th 1748; Jean Carlyle was Born November the 10th 1750; George Carlyle was Born May the 30th 1755; Robert Carlyle was Born November the 30: 1757; Rachel Carlyle was Born August the 31st 1763-- "These were the children of Robert of the Bullpasture and Nancy/Agnes. This information was published in Bath County Historical Society Newsletter, #20, Fall 1992, p. 4."

Additional sources : In an E-mail communication from James H. Fristoe , 13 Sep 1998, also has Robert and Nancy listed as parents of Georgs. He has different date of birth (31 May) date of marriage (7 Feb)and date of death (4 May).

MARRIAGE RECORD: "The Kentucky Genealogist", V.3, p.57, in a listing of Bourbon Co. (Ky.) Marriage Bonds, reports "George Carlyle (Carlile) to Peggy Crockett 17 Feb 1791. Bd. Andrew Kincaid (Kincade). Alexander "Reigh" (Rhea), guardian gave warrant for marriage of Peggy Crockit to George Carlyle. Wit: John Bostrick and Robert Crockit."

George Carlile in Woodford Co.KY Tax List, May 22, 1790, and August 1800.

(Note: Also listed in these tax lists were a James Carlile (Jul 1, 1790) and a Thomas Carlile (July 30, 1790). Wonder what relationship they were to George? There was also a Basil Carlisle in the 1810 Woodford Co. KY) In the 1810 Woodford Co. KY Census, George had males 3-1-0-0-1 & females 2-1-5-0-1. He was listed in Woodford Co. 1820. Census with males 1-1-1-0-1 & females 2-1-5-0-1.)

Also from James H. Fristoe was a report from "The History of Woodford County, Kentucky, by William E. Railey: "The Carlyles were representative of good old Virginia stock. They came to Kentucky early and located in Woodford County, settling upon a farm near Midway on the Versailles and Midway road. Jesse Martin lived there for many years, and it is now the property of Henry L. Martin adjoining his present site, but nearer Midway. George Carlyle and his wife Margaret Crockett, and his children, numbering in all twelve persons in 1810, lived here and reared their family. He had fourteen slaves that he used in the cultivation of his large estate. In the census of 1810 his name is erroneously spelled Carlisle............his wife, Margaret Crockett was a daughter of Alexander Crockett and Margaret Campbell".

From "Carlile And Related Families, Augusta, Bath and Highland Counties Virginia 1745 to 1875" by Carol Watson and Frances Buchanan Arlington, 1994. "11 Nov 1773 - John and Robert Carlyle, in a confused proceeding, divided part of the land they had patented together and conveyed two other tracts to their eldest sons, (John Carlyle Jr. and George Carlyle): 11 November 1773, John Carlile, Sr. and Elizabeth (x) and Robert Carlile (x) and Nancy (x) to George Carlile, 170 pounds, 204 acres on Bullpasture River patented to John McCreary now in possession of Joseph Malcomb. Teste: John Hicklin, Boud (Boude) Estill, Thomas Hicklin (Recorded Augusta County, 17 Nov. 1773)

"George sold these acres to William Erwin for 10 pounds in 1786 (Augusta Co. Land Records, 1786, O.F. Morton, Highland). In 1787 George was on a Fayette Co. KY tax list with 4 horses and 6 cattle (Schreiner-Yantis, pg. 8). In 1790, George was listed in Fayette Co. KY, paying taxes assessed 21 Jul 1789. 22 May 1790, George paid taxes in Woodford Co. KY....listed twice in 1790 "census"....did not change locations in Kentucky, as part of Fayette Co. was taken to form Woodford County in 1788-1789."

"A deposition by George Carlile, taken at the house of John Keiser in Lexington, KKY, on 18 September 1811, tells in part George Carlile's story:

I came to Kentucky in September 1779 and have been generally here ever since that time. The officers' surveys were called military surveys at that time...I knew Hancock Taylor and Abraham Haptonstall to be owners of the one I settled on. I knew Charles Lewis who was killed at the Point (Point Pleasant in Oct. 1774) was the owner of the one that joined me.." (Fayette Circuit Court Proceedings, Book C, pg. 336) (Cook, Fayette, pg. 267)."

"Abraham Haptonstall, owner of the land George settled on in Fayette County, was living on the Bullpasture River in Augusta County.....on a list of tithables just five names below Robert Carlile in 1777. Charles Lewis lived on the Cowpasture."

"At a Court Cont's & held at Bryants Station on Elkhorn Creek for adjusting Titles to unpatented Lands by the Commissioners of Kentucky District this 15th day of Jan'y 1780: George Carlyle, Assee of John Morrison this day claimed a preempt of 400 Acres of land at the State price in the district of Kentucky opposite the Mouth of Millers Creek lying on the south side of Kentucky the s'd Morrison making an Actual settlement in the Month of April 1779 satisfactory proof being made to the Court they are of Opinion that the s'd Carlisle has a right to a preempt of 400 Acres of Land to include the above Location & that a Certificate (be) issued accordingly (Certificate, 141)"

In 1797 surveys #2194, @@2195, and #2196 were made on the Kentucky River opposite the mouth of Miller's Creek in Madison County, originally Lincoln County, for James and John Carlyle. Survey @@2194 adjoined the above preemption land.
