- Not to be confused with James Carlisle (1756-1805) of Bath County, Virginia and Campbell County, Kentucky, who some researchers have believed was the one whose will is listed below. One key person that helps prove that it was this James Carlisle whose will was written and proven in 1802 in Bath County, Virginia is daughter Elizabeth Carlisle (1783-1863) who is referred to as "Elizabeth Hicklin" in the will, as she had married George Hicklin on 9 December 1800. The younger John Carlisle's daughter Elizabeth Carlisls was born on 16 March 1792, which was much too young to have been married in 1800.

James Carlisle, Jr. acquired land in the "Calfpasture" area of Augusta County, VA from his father, James Carlisle, Sr. after he died in 1753. He sold part of that larger tract to his brother, John Carlisle in the first transaction listed in "dispositions" below:

Know all men by these presents that we Samuel Campbell, George Wilson & James Carlisle are held & firmly bound unto John Buchanan, Rob't Breckenridge, John Chrisham & Frank Tyler, Justices in the Commission of the peace for Augusta County for and in behalf of the Justices & their successors in the sum of five hundred pounds to be paid to the said Justices & their successors for the which payment well & truly to be made, we bond ourselves and every one of our Heirs, Executors & Administrators jointly & severally firmly by these presents sealed with our seals, Dated this 22nd day of November Anno Dom. 1759.

The marriage of James Jr. & Rachel Campbell "probably took place after the 18th May 1753, as Rachel's signature was not on the deed to John (land sale by James Jr. to his brother, John) but before the 5th of October 1754, the date of the will of William Campbelll, Rachel's father..." who lists daughters...Rachel Carlile. Chalkey, III, pg. 56).
"Vol. 7 of Hening's Statutes at Large shows payment by the Assembly of 5.2.6 pounds, 14 Sep 1758 during the French and Indian War "to James Carlyle for a horse impressed, on the Shawnee's expedition, and not returned", pg. 189.
"1764 - James Jr. sold remainder of the Calfpasture land to Thomas Hugart, for 130 pounds, 35 acres....Teste signers were Benj. Estill, Robert Knox, Wm. Kinkead, John Carlile, and Samuel Campbell(Rachel's brother). Deed was signed by James Carlile and Rachel Carlile, her mark. The sale of the land was the last record of James Jr. in Augusta Co., except for a 1782 list of...tax delinquents which stated: "James Carlile (gone to) Holston (River), Chalkey, II, pg. 424. James not listed in the 1777 tithables on the Calfpasture. According to a son of James Jr. (James P.) he remained in Augusta Co. until 1780, but there is no estate record ..."
"Land grant records in Tennessee of the Holston River Settlement show a grant in 1787 to James Carlisle, 200 acres on the south side of Holston in Sullivan Co., TN (Cartwright, pg. 30). Whether this grant was to James Carlile Jr. or to one of the Edgecombe Co. NC Carlile family, is unknown.."

KY to James Carlile of Green Co. KY. The purpose of the attorney was to collect money due John from the 1796 estate of John Carlile of Augusta Co. Va. John Carlisle was listed in Washington Co. KY tax records in 1792 with 1 black; 2 horses, and 8 cattle. He also paid taxes there in the years 1793-1795 (Early KY Tax Records, pg. 250). John was a witness in Green Co. KY to a deed dated Feb. 22, 1802, Joseph Richerson to Joseph Ray of Wash. Co. KY (Wright)."

He served with John Carlile in the Lincoln Militia 22 Oct -24 Nov 1782 under Capt. Andrew Kinkead "on an expedition against the Shawneys, commanded by Gen. George Rogers Clark".. Thomas was a tithable in Nelson County in 1787 (Schreiner-Yantis, pg. 1372) and listed in the 1790 Woodford Co. KY census." Thomas married Betsy (Carlyle) Dudley on 1 Jun 1803 in , Green Co., KY.
