As was his father Daniel, John Jacob was probably born in the PALATINATE. With his parents and siblings, he migrated to America via La Havre, France. They arrived in New York City on 10 May 1837. The CastleGarden.org documents give his name as Jacob LAUER, age 17.

The family settled in Jefferson Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio, where John Jacob met his future wife, Magdalena Karns. The marriage records spell his surname: LOWER, and Magdalena's: CARNS. They probably met at Zion's Congregation, where both families were members.

The couple, with their first two children, were probably part of the "group of pioneers" who moved to Wabash County, Indiana in circa 1848. It seems that John Jacob first settled south of the future village of Urbana, then later settled north of the village in Section 31, along side the future Indiana Highway 13. The farm contained 86 acres. He built a log cabin on the property. A huge 1861 plat map on the wall of the Wabash County Historical Muesum, shows his farm, and shows his name as: John LOWER.

John Jacob was one of the 18 (or 21?) founders of St. Peter's Church, along with his father, and his brothers, and others.

John Jacob died in his old log cabin in 1887, despite the family having constructed a modern home just behind it. He was buried in the Urbana Cemetery.

Note the addition of a map of the Stone Creek area. John Jacob & Magdalena were probably married at the Zion's Church, which at that time would have been located at the cemetery, marked on the map, just northwest of the town. The reddish lines are Interstate 77.
