ADAM arrived in New York City on 10 May 1837, on the ship "Hilah" from La Havre, France. With his parents and siblings, he went on to Tuscarawas County, Ohio.

Apparently he moved again, to Wabash County, with his parents and some siblings in circa 1848. Soon he was listed as one of the 18 (or 21?) founders of St. Peter's Church. In 1851 Adam's nephew, probably named for him, was born.

In the period 1862 to 1875 Adam moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan, where some of his descendants remained. Adam moved back to Urbana, where he died, and was buried.

This compiler made a note of seeing Adam's tombstone at the Urbana Cemetery in July 1964. It was noted that the death date was 1881, and his surname was spelled: LOWER. The stone has not been seen since by this compiler, and therefore it has been assumed that it has weathered away. No known photo of it exists.

Gretchen Wilson, a descendant of Adam's, has done research at the Wabash County Courthouse, and shared much of her research with James Lower, and so much of the data on Adam's descendants is based upon her research.

Listed as one of the first members of St. Peter's Church at Urbana. Surname spelled: LAUER.

  3. Haupert, James. St. Peter's Cemetery Records.

James had compiled a great resource in this index. However, he made a big mistake in getting his Adam Lowers mixed up! He listed this Adam as the husband of Barbara Henry! An obvious error, that he should have known. James also spelled his surname LAUER, but Adam (as well as his nephew, Adam) always used the LOWER spelling.

  4. 1880 Federal Census.

Surname spelled: LAWER, as his nephew Jacob spelled his. Gives his birth place as: BADEN.
