NICHOLAS was born in an unknown German state. Probably the Palatinate, or perhaps Baden. The 1860 Federal Census says Baden. His surname is spelled LOWER in that census, and he was living in Noble Township, Wabash County at that time.

Nicholas arrived in America on 10 May 1837, in New York City, with his parents and siblings, aboard the ship "Hilah". The family went on to Jefferson Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio.

In circa 1848, most of the Lower family moved on to Wabash County, where many of the descendants remained. Nicholas was listed as one of the first members of St. Peter's Church at Urbana (circa 1851).

Nicholas and his family migrated on to Illinois between 1863 and 1866.
