John Dean was born on 19th October 1820 and baptised the following month at Great Gaddesden in Hertfordshire. He was the son of a straw plaiter called Elizabeth Dean, formerly Hobbs, and her husband James Dean, a labourer.
John's father died in 1840.
The 1841 census finds John working as an agricultural labourer at Southing Farm in Great Gaddesden, near to where his mother was living on Gaddesden Row.
On 25th October 1845, aged 25, John married Elizabeth Mead at Great Gaddesden. They went on to have three children together at Great Gaddesden between 1846 and 1854. The 1851 and 1861 censuses each find John and Elizabeth living on Gaddesden Row in Great Gaddesden, with John working as an agricultural labourer and Elizabeth as a straw plaiter.
John's mother died in 1866.
The 1871, 1881, and 1891 censuses all find John and Elizabeth living at Bunker's Cottages in Great Gaddesden. In 1881 John was described as a gardener.
Elizabeth died in 1895, aged 72.
The 1901 census finds John living with his daughter Ann and her husband and children at Wesley Road in Hemel Hempstead, the town just south of Great Gaddesden. He was described as a gardener.
John died in 1907, aged 86 or 87.

d. John DEAN, June Quarter 1907, Hemel Hempstead Registration District, Volume 3a, page 406, aged 86 [1820/1] d. John DEAN, December Quarter 1907, Hemel Hempstead Registration District, Volume 3a, page 415, aged 87 [1819/20]
Two equally plausible deaths, which both happen to be in 1907. One is presumably this John, the other a very similarly aged John who also happened to live in Great Gaddesden. The other John married a Harriet Draper in 1855, and his marriage record gives his father's name as William, enabling the two to be differentiated through the censuses. It appears that both died during 1907, but the certificates would need to obtained to try and establish which death is which.
