Ann Maria Dean was born on 22nd August 1818 and baptised the following month at Great Gaddesden in Hertfordshire. She was the daughter of a straw plaiter called Elizabeth Dean, formerly Hobbs, and her husband James Dean, a labourer. She appears to have been known by her middle name.
Maria's father died in 1840.
The 1841 census finds Maria living with her mother and brother at Gaddesden Row. Later that year, Maria was caught in a fight between her brother and another man in a beer shop on Gaddesden Row, and the other man was convicted of assaulting her.
Maria never married. She appears in the 1851 and 1861 censuses living with her mother in Great Gaddesden, and working as a straw plaiter. Her mother died in 1866.
Maria then went to live with her sister Hannah and her husband, living with them at Carpenders Farm Cottages at Oxhey in Watford by the time of the 1871 census. She moved with them to Mead Cottage in Bushey, where they were living in 1881. Maria was described as an "agricultural labouress".
Maria's sister and brother-in-law both died in 1885, and by 1891 Maria had returned to her native Great Gaddesden, working again as a straw plaiter.
The 1901 census finds Maria as an inmate of the Hemel Hempstead Union Workhouse. Maria died in 1905, aged 87.
