Daniel Dean was born on 3rd April 1812 and baptised the following month at Great Gaddesden in Hertfordshire. He was the son of a straw plaiter called Elizabeth Dean, formerly Hobbs, and her husband James Dean, a labourer.

Daniel's father died in February 1840.

Later that same year, on 21st September 1840, Daniel married Comfort Rogers at Great Gaddesden. After their marriage they moved about thirteen miles south to Bushey, where they appear in the 1841 census living on Clay Hill, and where their first daughter was born later in 1841.

By 1844 they had returned to Great Gaddesden. In total they had eight children together between 1841 and 1861. The 1851 and 1861 censuses each find Daniel, Comfort and their children living on Gaddesden Row in Great Gaddesden. Daniel worked as an agricultural labourer, whilst Comfort was a straw plaiter.

Daniel's mother died in 1866.

Comfort died in 1867, a couple of weeks after her fiftieth birthday.

The 1871 census finds Daniel and four of his children living at Gaddesden Row. His daughter Louisa was described in that census as being an "idiot from birth".

Daniel died at the age of 63. He was buried at Great Gaddesden on 28th October 1875.
