Abigail Dean was born on 4th June 1823 and baptised the following month at Great Gaddesden in Hertfordshire. She was the daughter of a straw plaiter called Elizabeth Dean, formerly Hobbs, and her husband James Dean, a labourer. The family did not live in Great Gaddesden village itself, but in the hamlet of Gaddesden Row to the east of the parish.

Sadly Abigail died as a baby of five months old, being buried at Great Gaddesden on 16th November 1823.
