Hannah Dean was born on 30th May 1816 and baptised the following month at Great Gaddesden in Hertfordshire. She was the daughter of a straw plaiter called Elizabeth Dean, formerly Hobbs, and her husband James Dean, a labourer.

On 19th October 1839, aged 23, Hannah married William Slaughter at Great Gaddesden.

Hannah's father died in 1840.

After their marriage, Hannah and William moved to Bushey, near Watford, about thirteen miles south of Great Gaddesden. The 1841 census finds them living on Merry Hill Lane in Bushey, with William working as an agricultural labourer.

Hannah and William had two children together, but sadly both died young. They had a son called William in 1847, who died shortly after being born, with his birth and death both being registered in the same quarter. He was followed in 1848 by a daughter called Hannah, who died when she was nine months old in 1849.

The 1851 census finds Hannah, William and Hannah's brother Joseph living at Burchell Cottage in Bushey. Hannah was working as a straw plaiter at this time.

By 1861 Hannah and William had moved to Carpenders Farm at Oxhey in the parish of Watford. In 1861 they were described as boarders living in the farmhouse with the farmer, and William was working as a shepherd.

Back in Great Gaddesden, Hannah's mother died in 1866.

Hannah and William were still at Carpenders Farm in 1871, but living in one of the separate farm workers' cottages beside it. William was working as a ploughman in 1871. Hannah's sister Maria was living with them there too.

Hannah and William later returned to Bushey, appearing in the 1881 census living at Mead Cottage. Hannah's sister Maria was still living with them.

William died at the age of 65. He was buried at Aldenham, just north of Bushey, of 24th January 1885. His last abode was given as Spring Cottages in Bushey. Hannah only survived him by a few months, dying later that same year, aged 69. She was buried at Aldenham on 27th November 1885, and her last abode was also given as Spring Cottages in Bushey.
