Joseph Dean was baptised on 20th March 1808 at Great Gaddesden in Hertfordshire, son of a straw plaiter called Elizabeth Dean, formerly Hobbs, and her husband James Dean, a labourer.
Joseph's father died in 1840.
The 1841 census finds Joseph listed with his mother and sister at Gaddesden Row in Great Gaddesden, although it does appear that someone has later crossed through his entry. Joseph does not appear to have have married. In the 1851 census he was lodging with his sister Hannah and her husband at Bushey, 13 miles south of Great Gaddesden, described as a farm labourer. Joseph appears in the 1861 census living in a barn on Gaddesden Row, described as an agricultural labourer.
Joseph died at the age of 54 at the workhouse in Hemel Hempstead. He was buried at St John's church in the Boxmoor area of Hemel Hempstead on 7th February 1863. His mother survived him.
